Chapter 4

Derrick woke up with a start the next morning and jumped up when he saw the clock. It was already close to noon. He slid out of bed and headed towards the guest room to make sure Beth didn’t also oversleep. He felt a bit of disappointment when he saw the open door and vacant room. She had made the bed and left a sweet, short thank-you note.

Derrick cracked open his door and heard nothing. Short of a welcome mat now being placed outside of her door, there was no sign of Beth. The moving company easily could have already shown up and dropped off everything in the time that he was sleeping. He closed the door and made his way to the coffee maker and stopped suddenly.

Beth had taken the time to load the dishwasher and clean up the kitchen, which Derrick totally neglected to do. The dishwasher was still running, so she must’ve turned it on recently. The cycle only lasts an hour and a half. He felt a smile spread across his face when he saw that she had also left him a covered plate of freshly baked sugar cookies. He had mentioned his love for them the night before. How did he sleep through all of this?

Derrick whistled as he hopped in the shower and washed up, all the way through to him getting dressed. He played out a scenario in his head, over and over. He was going to ask Beth out on a date for the upcoming Saturday. Part of him wondered if it was too sudden, but the rest of him wanted to make sure he at least let her know that he thought she was amazing. He knew a wonderful Vietnamese restaurant in the city that she’d love, and his friend was hosting a great set with an amazing South African songstress that held onto her roots so beautifully. It would be a great time.

He spent the day working on some works in progress, keeping an ear out for any sign of Beth. He realized that he didn’t ask for her number or offer his. In the back of his head, he felt a bit sheepish. In just one day, this woman came in like a hurricane and invaded his thoughts. As the sun sank in the sky, he decided to leave a note on her door with his number, asking her to call. Retreating back into his apartment, he couldn’t fully focus on his client work. Instead, he opted to watch some television and reheat leftover pizza.
